Since joining the Legacy.com team eight years ago, I’ve regularly thought about what my legacy will be. After reading thousands of obituaries and condolence messages, I can’t help but wonder – what will people remember about me after I pass away? What will they say in my Guest Book?
My hope is that people will remember me at my core as a caring and thoughtful friend, an understanding and encouraging boss, a loving mother, a devoted wife; someone they could turn to for comfort and support, who found the humor in nearly every situation and laughed at herself often, and who strived to put others before herself. Of course, I’m not perfect. So I also hope that the “good” things I want people to remember will dwarf any memory of the “not-so-good” things.
But it all comes down to this – I need to live the life I want people to remember. If I want people to remember that I always had a funny story to share, I need to share those stories; if I want my team members to remember me as an understanding boss, I need to be patient and kind when things don’t go quite right; if I want friends to remember me as always having a shoulder to cry on, I need to notice when they need that shoulder and offer it up to them.
How do you want to be remembered? And are you living the life you want people to remember?
